Sumo Wrestling in Japan is one of the most popular sports in the country. Ryōgoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall is an indoor sporting arena in Sumida, near the Edo-Tokyo Museum, known for hosting Sumo wrestling tournaments. It also houses an interesting Sumo museum. All the traditions and rituals and, of course, the full-on bouts make a visit to the Sumo hall unmissable. The Nippon Budokan was originally built for the judo competition of the 1964 Summer Olympics and seats just under 15,000 people. The Tokyo Dome is the home field of the Yomiuri Giants Baseball team and was opened in 1988. It is Japan’s first air-supported dome and has the nickname ‘The Big Egg’. Visited by more than 8 million people annually it has hosted basketball, American football, soccer, mixed martial arts and music concerts in addition to baseball. The maximum capacity for the stadium is 57,000 whilst the standard all-seating configuration for baseball is 42,000. Staying at the wonderful 5 star Imperial Hotel in Chiyoda - an amazing landmark that has been open for over 100 years - with state of the art facilities, great food and second to none service you, will feel at home in a hotel that exceeds all expectations.

What to do in Tokyo

Tokyo is Japan's capital and the world's most populous metropolis; it offers an unlimited choice of shopping, culture, entertainment and dining to its visitors as well as large green spaces and museums.

Day 1

With a population of over 9 million, Tokyo is vast but we recommend you start your trip with a walk through the local neighbourhood to acclimatise. Get some traditional food at Kagurazaka Ishikawa, for an all round Japanese experience, and then go to the impressive Imperial Palace in Chiyoda before maybe finishing the evening at Havespi, a traditional Shōchū Bar with over 100 varieties on offer. You won’t be disappointed!

Day 2

Baseball in Japan is a special experience - by the time the first pitch is thrown you will see the whole stadium become packed - the noise is incredible! Team mascots are a fan favourite for people of all ages, not just the young, and the mascots shake hands as a sign of peace before battle commences. After enjoying the excitement of the baseball at the Tokyo Dome we suggest a traditional Sushi Meal at the highly rated Kizushi Restaurant - make sure to try some warm Sake as well. Finish your day at the hotel with a nightcap whilst you enjoy the stunning view.

Day 3

Every trip to Tokyo should include a visit to the Toyosu Market (formerly the Tskuji Fish Market) where you can enjoy the drama of the tuna auction. In the evening head to the Nippon Budokan for the opening night of the Karate 1 tournament. The venue is an iconic building located in Chiyoda, equally famous as a venue for music concerts as well as martial arts competitions. You will have a fantastic time at this historic stadium with its great atmosphere.

Day 4

Why not wander to Shibuya and see the Shibuya Crossing? This hugely crowded intersection in Tokyo is one of the most visited sites in the city, where people watch and wonder at how nobody bumps into each other! Continue on to have a much needed lunch at the fantastic Afuri Ramen, where our favourite is the Yuzu Ratanmen with Dashi spiced broth. As the evening draws in you might want to catch a show at the famous Kabukiza Theatre.

Day 5

Sumo Wrestling in Japan is one of the most popular sports in the country. Soak in the thrilling atmosphere of this really unique and special experience. After enjoying the event at the historical Ryōgoku Kokugikan why not have a traditional dinner at Fuku Yakitori restaurant? Watch the chefs grill in the open plan setting and enjoy your final evening in style.
